Every now and then, a story lands that cuts through the noise — not because it’s loud, but because it exposes a quiet gap in how people now use AI.
According to The Financial Express, citing AFP’s investigations and a Columbia University research effort, seven major AI chatbots regularly fail to recognize fake images. In several real-world cases, chatbots confidently labelled synthetic visuals as authentic — including images generated using the very tools users were asking about. One example came from the Philippines, where a viral photo claimed to show former lawmaker Elizaldy Co in Portugal. Google’s AI mode confidently marked it as genuine. AFP later traced the photo back to its creator — who confirmed it was produced using Google’s own AI generator.
A similar pattern appeared during protests in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. A fabricated image of demonstrators circulated widely, and both Gemini and Microsoft Copilot verified it as real, despite the image also originating from Google’s AI tools.
Researchers noted that as more people turn to AI chatbots instead of search engines or human fact-checkers, the risk compounds. A Columbia University study found that seven AI models, including ChatGPT and Gemini, failed to identify the true origins of real journalistic photographs.
Experts explained the underlying limitation: these systems remain language-first, not vision-forensic models. The nuance required for evaluating image authenticity — provenance, pixel-level anomalies, manipulation patterns — is not something LLMs were designed for.
At the same time, human fact-checking capacity is shrinking. Meta has ended its third-party fact-checking program in the US, turning instead toward crowd-based mechanisms. Verification is thinning out just as synthetic media accelerates.
Why This Matters
People increasingly treat chatbots as if they are gateways to truth. Instead of “searching,” users now simply upload an image and ask:
“Is this real?”
It feels simpler. It feels faster.
But simplicity doesn’t equal accuracy.
